The 84-year-old American actress has revealed that she has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, describing it as “a cancer that responds very well to treatment”. “80% of people survive, so I feel very lucky,” she added. In its publication, the foundation also highlighted the state of health care in the U.S. and said it would continue to fight for the environment.
She says she feels lucky because she has insurance and access to the best doctors and treatments. “I realize, and this [realization] is painful, that this is my privilege,” she wrote. “Almost every family in America will deal with cancer at some point, and too many do not have access to the quality medical care that I receive, and that is wrong.”
Nehodzhkinskaya lymphoma is a less common type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system. The foundation’s representative wrote that she will have to undergo chemotherapy for six months, but that she will not allow the treatment to interfere with her climate activism.
