We have the situation under control. Thanks to the coordinated work of doctors, some patients are showing positive progress,” the regional government’s health department said.

Seven people died of cider poisoning in the Samara region, two more in the Nizhny Novgorod region, and one in Udmurtia. On Tuesday, the management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Ulyanovsk region reported that the experts had found traces of methanol and ethyl butyrate in dangerous proportions for humans in a batch of “Mister Cider” beverage seized in the region. The regional authorities recommended that catering establishments suspend the sale of cider.

Criminal cases were opened in connection with the poisoning of people under the article “Rendering services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the unintentional death of two or more people” (Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The Investigative Committee of Russia previously reported that as part of the criminal case investigation, the owner of LLC “Andi” – 32-year-old entrepreneur Anar Guseynov – was detained. On Tuesday, a court in Ulyanovsk remanded him in custody. Already a year ago, law enforcement agencies tried to hold him accountable for violating the rules of alcohol trade. At that time he was fined 10,000 rubles for selling alcoholic products without the appropriate documents.

The last mass poisoning with surrogate alcohol in Russia occurred in the Orenburg region in the fall of 2021. At that time, 35 people died after consuming alcoholic beverages contaminated with methyl alcohol.
